They saw New York is the city that never sleeps but when it comes to the number of casinos in the city it seems to have completely switched off.
That of course isn’t the fault of the people, with laws having prevented casinos within the state borders for a number of years.
During that period New Yorkers have had to take the three hour drive of the city to the likes of New Jersey, while you’ll also find one in Queens since 2011.
The Resorts World Casino at the Aqueduct racetrack opened due to laws allowing video slots to be played at racetracks. To this day it remains the only casino in the city of New York.

That could all be about to change though. New laws have passed in the state allowing casinos off racetrack and Indian reservations, with as many as seven new casinos expected.
That’s in addition to a potential change in online gambling laws which has welcomed an influx of gambling sites like Betting Appsto other states like neighboring New Jersey, allowing sportsbook betting and more.
This has proved a real gamechanger with a number of casinos upstate teaming up with popular sportsbook operators, while sports teams in the city are keen to form official partnerships with operators.
An influx of casinos in the city would of course split opinion. Would the likes of Times Square welcome one given its already a huge tourist hotspot?
The answer is simply money. Revenue would increase significantly in the city with the introduction of casinos, as well as providing another entertainment option in a city that already has pretty much everything.
A new casino is helping rejuvenate the Catskills area of New York, after almost four decades of trying to get one placed.
Resorts World Catskills opened in February, costing $1.2billion and provides a stopgap for those driving into the city as well as those wanting to escape to the mountains.
Four casinos now lie in upstate New York, a number of which are struggling according to reports after just a year in business. However, surely a big name within the city would see a different outcome.
Whether we’ll see any in the near future is a different story though.
2019 is expected to see the legislation of online gambling in New York, although it’s never a given. In the past legislation has gone through the senate with ease but comes to a halt in the lower chamber.
The winds of change are blowing though. If that gets passed it’ll be a significant move as sportsbook and online gambling becomes more popular in the city.
Demand would naturally see a casino want to open up within the city, as well as help the currently struggling out-of-town resorts who are in desperate need of a tourism boost.

For now though the bright lights of Caesars or MGM appear to be some time off lighting up Times Square, but as a new dawn in American legislation begins, you never know how long ‘some time’ might be.
